Prof Picks | 20,000 Species of Bees (2023) with Professor Raquel Mattson-Prieto

Our Prof Picks Series continues in May with a 2023 film from Spain selected and presented by Raquel Mattson-Prieto, course coordinator for Spanish Language and Culture through Cinema. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲: Set in the Basque Country during the summer holiday, this is a moving story of an eight-year-old’s realization that she is transgender. Lucía and her family explore and struggle with identity and femininity as she begins to comprehend her true selfhood. Sofía Otero won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at the Berlin International film festival, making her the youngest person ever to win the award. In Spanish w/ subtitles.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿: Raquel Mattson-Prieto (Ph.D., Temple University) is a lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and serves as the course coordinator for Spanish Language and Culture through Cinema. The course program features a variety of works from the Latin American and Spanish film canon, as well as independent films from Spanish-speaking communities. Through film, students have the opportunity to watch movies in the target language, learn technical terms related to film production, camera movement, and setting, and engage in meaningful discussions about the films’ social, political, and historical contexts.
